There are three countries where church members have been directly involved in mission projects in the recent past and we continue to support them through prayer and on-going financial commitments. These are Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Ukraine. Projects are highlighted through Sunday service updates, displays in the foyer and Newsletter items. When possible we invite speakers from different Mission agencies, usually on a Sunday.
Current Projects
Romans One Eleven Trust in Uganda
For many years we have supported the work of Romans 1-11 Trust in Uganda. The charity supports the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Uganda (RPCU) in training its pastors at Spiritual Life Centres, partners with some of their pastors, churches, schools and orphanages, and runs sponsorship schemes for children and pastors. We have hosted pastors and members of our congregation have joined teams visiting the charity’s projects in Uganda. We at Cornerstone have an interest in and pray for all the work of Romans 1-11, but we support in particular Pastor Julius Bigirwenkya at Kakumiro, his church and school.
Sierra Leone
We have a heart to support the local church in Sierra Leone, share the Gospel and bring practical relief to the people. This has been undertaken by short-term teams from Cornerstone working with churches, individuals, hospitals, children’s organisations and relief agencies. This is currently focussed on Kafanta Village and Pastor John Turay’s Divine Grace Ministries. We also send out aid via Practical Tools Initiative.
Hope Now in Ukraine
This is a Southampton-based charity. Cornerstone supports their work amongst orphans, widows and prisoners in the Ukraine. We have had close contact with Hope Now for several years. Before the war there were Summer Camps each year and two of our team have been out to Ukraine to help in the Widows’ and the Children’s Camps. Hope Now balances evangelism with social action. It exists to spread the good news of Jesus Christ and achieves this through evangelism, mixed with social action. At present, the charity is also involved in helping the refugees from Eastern Ukraine and in educating pastors. Most of the financial support for the above projects comes from our Church Outreach Fund.
Christian Aid
We support Christian Aid and each year and make Envelopes available for people to make a donation during Christian Aid Week. Christian Aid magazines are available in the foyer.
Fairtrade
We as a church have a policy of using fairly traded products. Occasionally on a Sunday, we set up a table selling fairly traded goods.
Persecuted Christians
We prayerfully support our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world, hearing news of them through Open Doors and Barnabas Fund. Some of our members are actively involved in supporting them.
Other Organisations
Individual members of the congregation support other organisations like Sailors’ Society, Africa Inland Mission and Traidcraft. Their literature is often available below the World Mission board in the foyer.
